Negro Humor Gallery

The several images seen on this Negro Humor Gallery were often found on post cards or other published materials. They are representative of the Southern Negro lifestyle of the late 1800s and early 1900s, as viewed by both White people and also by Negro people. It offers the viewer a glimpse of the Negro experience of the times, and as such, these were not at that time considered derogatory, “racist” or a negative view of Negro people. The difficulty in understanding this kind of humor now is that these images do not represent how people look upon the Negro lifestyle of today.
