Dreux was a native of New Orleans and served as district attorney and a state legislature member before the war. He was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Louisiana Guard Battalion and commanded the first five groups of soldiers that volunteered for the war from Louisiana. He is also said to be the first Confederate officer to be killed in the war, in Newport News, Virginia.
